History of ancient Greece: Yale University Course by Professor Donald Kagan. We find this the very best series of videos about ancient Greece and could not be otherwise since the speaker was one of the most prominent historians!
The Rise and Fall of Europe's first civilisation: Island of the Minotaur . Although a bit old fashioned, this TV documentary is one of the most thorough about the fascinating and intriguing Minoan civilisation, considered the first one in Europe.
Pavlopetri - City beneath the waves : A fascinating BBC documentary about the most ancient sunken city in the world that provided lots of new evidence about the prehistory of Greece!

Greco-Persian Wars - part 1 . Persia, the biggest empire in the ancient world, at that time, seeks to expand to Europe. After a failed rebellion of ancient Greek cities in the coast of Ionia, the Persians want to punish Athens and Eretria, who supported the revolt and send a large army against them. The battle of Marathon is the opening act
Greco-Persian Wars - part 2 . Ten years after Marathon, Persia returns, this time with a huge army and navy, determined to crash Greece and subjugate it. Against all odds, Greeks give three major battles, the Thermopylae, the Salamis naval battle (biggest naval battle of ancient times and Platea and put an end into the Persian's dream of expansion in Europe
Peloponnesian War and "Thucidides Trap" . After the Persian wars, Athens gains ground, in the Greek world and threatens the position of Sparta as the dominant power. Thus, war between them becomes inevitable, as Thucidides put it.
Xenofon's Anabasis . An amazing episode in ancient Greek History, where Xenophon, a student of Socrates, leads some 10.000 Greek mercenaries to return to Greece, after a campaign in the heart of the Persian empire. Trapped in enemy territory, they smash their way out and manage to return. Alexander the Great had this book under his pillow!
Fall of Sparta and Rise of Thebes . After the Pelopennesian War, Sparta dominated in Greece for some time but it was not the mighty force that once was. So, inevitably, challengers arise and Thebes, led by Epaminondas, destroys the Spartan army.
Rise of Macedonia - Alexander the Great . After a short period of Thebes domination in Greece, a new force rises, the Macedonians. Philippe, Alexander's father, unites Greece, under his leadership but is assasinated, just before the start of the campaign against Persia. His son Alexander, 20 years old, takes over and starts an amazing campaign that creates the biggest empire, stretching from Greece to Indus valley. This vast area flourishes and Greek language becomes the lingua franca.
Rome conquers Greece . After Alexander's death the empire is split in 4 regions but his successors fight constantly untill the Romans come. Egypt, under the Ptolemy's dynasty was the last region to be conquered and Cleopatra the last of the Greek governors.

From Solon to Pericles: The Evolution of Athenian Democracy. A timeline, with short explanations, of the most important moments in the development of the Athenian Democracy.
The Constitution of Athens . Although the title is not quite right (there was not a Constitution, as we know it today, in ancient Athens) this is an interesting video that depicts the development of institutions in Athens.
A fuller Athenian Democracy. Professor Donald Kagan, a prominent scholar, describes the second phase of the Athenian Democracy. It starts at chapter 5 and continues in the next episode.
The rise of Democracy in ancient Athens and questions for modern Democracy. A must watch video that sets many very interesting questions for today's Democracies!

Introduction to the Presocratics: An interesting series that covers some of the most influential Presocratic philophers.
Teachings of the Sophists : Socrates (and Plato) disliked them for a number of (serious) reasons. However, Protagoras and Gorgias, two of the most sigificant, came up with some interesting ideas.
Genius of the ancient world - Socrates : A BBC production on the life and ideas of Socrates.
Platonism - Imagination, Arts, Mathematics, and Self-Transformation : An interesting approach on why Plato is considered so important that Alfred North Whitehead wrote "the safest general characterization of the European philosophical tradition is that it consists of a series of footnotes to Plato"!!!
The life and Philosophy of Aristotle : A great and innovative mind, a scientist and a philosopher, Aristotle's contribution in the shaping of the western world is simply vast. It's unbelievable that one person produced that much in so many different fields!
Cynics, Stoics, Epicureans and Sceptics : After the three Great, a number of new Philosophical schools of thought appears in Athens creating a diverse intellectual atmosphere in the city and beyond!
Neoplatonism : A philosophical school, starting with Plotinus, that revives Platonism in an even more metaphysical perspective and influences Western, Islamic, and Jewish thought.
Hypatia and fall of Alexandria : Alexandria rises as a bright cultural center in the ancient world with its great Library. It produces a great line of mathematicians and intellectuals and finally Hypatia. This remarkable woman is considered the last ancient representative of Greek Philosophy (not quite right!) but her tragic death actually marks the decline of the pagan world.

Science

1 . The tunnel of Eypalinos: Considered one of ancient Greek great engineering achivement, this 1 kilometer tunnel was made under a mountain to bring water into the capital of ancient Samos. To reduce construction time, Eypalinos made two tunnels that met near the center! Just with the use of Geometry!

2. Archimedes : The greatest mathematician of antiquity, and possibly the greatest scientist, he left an amazing heritage, however we do not know if he was the inventor of the amazing "Antikythera Mechanism" as many claim.

3. Heron of Alexandria : An ingenious mathematician and engineer, considered by some as the "Da Vinci" of antiquity, Heron made more than 80 machines of any kind!

4. Antikythera Mechanism : In 1900, a shipwreck was discovered near Antikythera, a small Greek island and divers got many items, including a bronze, corroded, mechanism none could understand what it was. Today, it's admired as a scientific marvel that has earned the title "World's first computer"

This post suggests some of the most important ancient Greek texts, translated in English.

You may also find most of these texts free online, with just a Google search (in different translations)!

Classics

Homer: The Iliad

The two most famous Homeric Epics are considered among the greatest works of the world. There are so many translations but this one follows the iambic pentameter form, so...read it aloud (this is why it was written in this form!).

Homer: The Odyssey

The second Homeric poem was declared by BBC, some years ago, the no. 1 in their list of the " 10 top stories that shaped the world " (in the T.E. Lawrence translation which is also considered a great one). It seems that the story of a person returning to home, despite all the controversies and obstacles, is one that moves people across time and across the globe!

The following two texts are not for the begginers but those that want to dive deeper into the evolution of ancient Greek thoughts.

Hesiod: Theogony/ Works and Days

Hesiod, one of the earliest Greek poets, has given us the Theogony, the earliest account of the origin (and genealogy) of the ancient Greek Gods. It begins with this phrase: In the beggining there was Chaos (does it ring a bell?). We include it in the list not because it's a good choice for beginners but for its importance in the ancient Greek literature!

Writer unknown: The Orphic Hymns

The Orphic religion, one of the most ancient in the wider Greek world, is about the immortality of the soul and after life. Most likely influenced by Eastern ideas it, most likely, influenced great thinkers such as Pythagoras and Plato and this is why we include it. It's also worth to mention that some scholars find connections of the Orphic religion with the Rig Veda, an interesting idea that has not been examined in depth, although there is serious evidence to support this theory.

History

Herodotus: Histories

Was he accurate or not? This is the most usual question about Herodotus and despite the fact that he was given the title of “Father of History” by Cicero, there’s a centuries old debate about it (in antiquity he was called by Duris of Samos a “myth-monger”).

There is no final judgement for that, yet, even despite the fact that two of his “myths” proved right in recent years ( the army that was lost in Sahara and the Egyptian boat ). Anyway, he is the leading source for one of the most interesting periods of ancient Greece (the Persian Wars) and certainly an interesting read!

Thucidides: Peloponnesian War

Even though his predecessor, Herodotus, got the (still disputed) title “Father of History”, Thucydides is a whole new level and he is definitely the greatest Greek historian. His “Peloponnesian War” still reverberates throughout the centuries as an exemplar work of history and even geopolitical terms, used today, have been inspired by him (e.g. Thucydides trap, Melian Dialogue).

Xenophon: Anabasis

Xenophon, a man of many qualities, was an exceptional case in ancient Greek history. A philosopher (student of Socrates), a spokesman, a military leader, a writer and...more! He joined an expedition including some ten thousand Greeks led by the Persian governor Cyrus (the Younger) against his brother, the Persian king. After the defeat of Cyrus, it fell to Xenophon to lead the Greeks from the gates of Babylon back to the coast through inhospitable lands, the most famous retreat in ancient times! This book describes this amazing story.

Arrian: The campaigns of Alexander

There are some surviving histories of Alexander the Great (all written many years after his death) and among them Arrian's is widely considered the most reliable.

Biographies and similar

Plutarch: Greek Lives

Plutarch is the writer of Parallel Lives that refer to 48 (only 23 saved) pairs of Greeks and Romans biographies. It is not "history at its best" but a source of valuable information, since many of his sources are lost! Nevertheless, he contributes lots of stories that give useful insights in our efforts to better understand those men. The book we suggest covers 9 ancient Greeks, namely:

Lycurgus, Solon, Themistocles, Cimon, Alexander, Pericles, Nicias, Alcibiades, and Agesilaus . There are other editions that include all 23 pairs, but this one is a good starting point!

Diogenes Laertius: Lives of the eminent Philosophers

A very important book although it was written in the third century AD, long after the Philosophers he writes about had died, but it has used many sources that are not saved and this book is the only testimony. Lots af ancient Philosophers maxims are found only in this book, making it an invaluable source!

Xenophon: Cyrus the Great

A book on a Persian leader by an ancient Greek? Yes and it's actually a very good one! Xenophon is an underrated writer. This book can be considered the first "manual on leadership" and possibly the first "political philosophy" book that inspired many throughout the centuries (including the notorious Nicolo Machiavelli). Cyrus was an exceptional leader in the ancient world and was admired by many Greeks as the "Lawgiver"

Isocrates: Speeches

Isocrates is, most unfortunately, almost forgotten. A great orator and a mind way ahead of its time! Can you imagine a Greek 24 centuries ago to say: the name Hellenes (Greeks) suggests no longer a race but an intelligence, and the title Hellenes is applied rather to those who share our culture than to those who share a common blood??? I let others speak of him:

Philosophy

Robin Waterfield: The First Philosophers: The Presocratics and Sophists

There is not much left of the Pre-Socratic (Natural) philosopher's work, unfortunately only fragments and testimonies survived to our days, since their works were destroyed, usually by Christian zealots. Therefore, you can approach their ground-breaking ideas only through introductory books that include the most important fragments with commentaries. This book is a good introduction for the Presocratics and also the Sophists.

Socrates - Plato - Aristotle

As you (may) know, Socrates never wrote anything. Whatever we know of him comes mostly from Plato. Therefore scholars set the question: to what extend does Plato reproduce Socrate's ideas accurately? There seems to be a wide concesus that Plato's early works reflect Socrates in a more accurate manner, while his late reveal more his thoughts than his teacher's. Whatever the case, Plato's dialogues showcase the ingenuity of both the teacher and the student!

So, is there a reading order we should follow for Plato? In our humble opinion, the following is a good one:

Eythyphro: A great dialogue, where Socratic irony, at its best, goes hand in hand with vital philosophical questions on piety, justice, morality, virtue, and the pursuit of knowledge. It takes place at the courts, where Socrates goes to learn more about the accusations on him so, timewise, it sets the scene for his Apology.

Apology: Apology in its ancient Greek meaning is to defend your self in the court. Plato's version offers insights on the man, his thoughts and the nature of Philosophy. It is simply a must read. (There's also Xenophon's version which is slightly differrent).

Crito: Socrates is in the prison, waiting for his execution and Crito, one of his friends, tries to convince him to escape, since the court's decision is unjust. Socrates starts a well-argued discourse about morality, justice and laws that complements his Apology and sheds light to his decision.

Phaedo: In this last dialogue of Socrates with his students, hours before his execution, the great philosopher calmly discusses metaphysical issues, such as the nature of the soul and immortality along with the search of wisdom. It's a timeless book!

Meno: The dialogue starts with a "simple" question of Meno, whether virtue can be taught, triggering Socrates (and Plato) to launch a fascinating quest on the nature of knowledge. One of the most important ideas of Plato, the "Theory of Forms" (also Theory of Ideas) makes its entrance in this dialogue.

Republic: After the above mentioned, we reach the jewel of the crown, Plato's most famous and most important book! It is considered the cornerstone of the Western Philosophy. It will puzzle you with its many controversial views BUT always keep this in mind: You cannot judge the past based on the standards of today! Many of Plato's thoughts are timeless and universal, but not all.

Aristotle

We should say, that he is not easy to read, especially if you have not read Plato before (actually, most of the works of ancient Greek philosophers are not easy!). We suggest the following order: Nicomacheian Ethics - Politics - Metaphysics - On the Soul (De Anima)

Theater

Greek Tragedies

This series is considered among the best editions. Not all plays are "easy" reads but they will all give you chills! We should add something that may prove of help to anyone trying to understand these plays.

Except for the 12 Gods of Olympus, there was another one, a Goddess named " Anagke " meaning " Inevitability " (or"Necessity"). She ruled everything! All humans and even the Gods had to submit to her. So, life is not something that you can define, you can only react to its hardships, in the best way you can. But, no matter how hard you try, the end is always out of your control.

Greek Tragedies: Volume 1

It contains some of the very best works of the three ancient Greek writers, Aechylus, Sophocles and Euripides and is definitely the first one to read. Then, you can go ahead with the other two volumes. It includes:

" Agamemnon " is difficult but contains an amazing verse: In our sleep, pain which cannot forget falls drop by drop upon the heart until, in our own despair, against our will, comes wisdom through the awful grace of God. " Prometheus Bound " is in a way the equivalent of Adam and Eve in Old Testament, punished by the Gods for bringing knowledge to humans. " Oedipus the King " was considered by Aristotle the best tragedy ever written (we agree). " Antigone " sets questions that appear again and again over the centuries (divine laws v man-made laws), while " Hippolytus " makes us feel sad as we watch humans being the playthings of Gods.

Greek Tragedies: Volume 2

In the second volume you will find " The Trojian Women ", probably the most heartbreaking tragedy. Euripides depicts their sufferings in a way that will leave a mark on you. It's also interesting to read the " Electra " in two versions (Sophocles and Eyripides) showcasing their worldviews, while the " Libation Bearers " is part of a trilogy (Agamemnon and Eymenides). " Ifigeneia in Tauris " is not one of the best but scholars are not sure how to classify it, since no death occurs and there's even a happy end, so some call it a tragicomedy!

Greek Tragedies: Volume 3

In the last volume, there are also some of the best. Among them the " Eymenides " where you will be puzzled by the court decision. Were they right? " Philoctetes " and " Oedipus at Colonus " are among Sophocles best, while the " Bacchae " depicts the dark side of a God and " Alcestis " is one of the most unusual and controversial stories!

Aristophanes: Lysistrata and other plays

By far the best and most famous comedian, Aristophanes has written comedies that reflect the beliefs of his time. You cannot expect that you will understand and/or laugh with all his jokes as they concern a long past audience but nevertheless it's always interesting to see an ancient audacious writer mocking everyone (Socrates included)! This edition includes "Lysistrata" his most famous play.

Poetry

Pindar: The Odes

Considered by many scholars as one of the greatest of ancient Greek poets and called "melifluous" (beautiful word, isn't it?) while others see him as extremely "pompous" he had won such a fame back then that when Alexander the Great destroyed Thebes (Pindar's hometown) completely, he gave orders to spare only the house of the great poet! He most of all expresses the heroic spirit that dominated Greece in his time.

Sapho: Poems

Sapho, from the island of Lesbos (therefore "Lesbian" in Greek), was a poet of love, and became so famous in ancient Greece that she was called the "tenth muse". Unfortunately, not much of her works has survived, only one complete poem and fragments from eight more. In this book, the poet, classicist and translator Ann Carson is praised for delivering a great translation.

Alcaeus: Poems

Also from the island of Lesbos (or Mytilini) another great poet (overshadowed by Sapho). Also not much of his works has been saved but the fragments reveal a genuine talent.

Various poets:Greek Lyric

This volume contains the works of poets such as Stesichorus, Ibycus, Simonides , and others, an interesting collection of almost unknown poets even though they left an important heritage. Simonides, especially, was much praised in the ancient world.

Apollonius of Rhodes: The Voyage of Argo: The Argonautica

Written in the third century BC in Alexandria, it is the only full surviving account of Jason's legendary quest for the Golden Fleece!

It's an interesting myth and a great story!

B. P. Reardon: Ancient Greek Novels

An extensive collection of ancient Greek novels, it includes many stories from various writers. "Nine complete stories are included here as well as ten others, encompassing the whole range of classical themes: ideal romance, travel adventure, historical fiction, and comic parody" (from Amazon description). Democracy

For a long time, the ancient Athenian Democracy was seen by many as a "rule of the mob". Of course, this was a rather simplistic way to look at it but it had prevailed (just check the opinions of the founding fathers of American Democracy). Probably, the first change occured with the monumental work of George Grotte, who depicted it in a more sophisticated way. These books explore various aspects of the Athenian Democracy in a well founded manner and provide lots of insights on the issue.

Paul Cartledge - Democracy

Cartledge contends that there is no one "ancient Greek democracy" as pure and simple as is often believed… he sheds light on the variety of democratic practices in the classical world as well as on their similarities to and dissimilarities from modern democratic forms, from the American and French revolutions to contemporary political thought…

Moses I. Finley - Democracy Ancient and Modern

Finley's book is considered a classic one on the issue. One should always keep in mind that the first Democracy was an ongoing experiment, since there was no previous know-how and underwent a great number of changes!

Stephen Fry - Mythos

The first of a 4 volumes series (the others are: Heroes, Troy and Odyssey) this volume is a good starting point for adults. The writing of Stephen Fry and impressive artworks, make this edition a great introduction in Greek myths for the average reader.

Carl Kerenyi - The Gods of the Greeks and The Heroes of the Greeks

First things first, these two volumes are NOT for the average reader but only those who want to delve deep down into the Greek Mythology (by the way you may find these two volumes as one in some cases, under the title: The mythology of the Greeks).

Carl Kerenyi is most likely the founder of a modern look in ancient Greek myths that incorporates pchycological interpretations as he was influenced by Carl Jung's work, the famous psychiatrist. This aspect is actually the most important feature of myths (not just Greek ones, but all myths). Kerenyi used all available sources to give all versions of myths and this feature makes his work the most thourough examination of Greek Mythology!

J ostein Gaardner - Sophie's World

Disguised as a novel, this best seller book is actually a simple introduction to Western Philosophy for young and old!

1. Row in an...ancient warship (June 2026 - dates to be announced)

The ancient trireme "Olympias" is the only real replica of the famous warship of the Athenians that helped them to win the biggest naval battle of antiquity against the Persians (Salamina battle) . It is an exact reconstruction of the ancient Athenian trireme and an important example of experimental archaeology. It is also a commissioned ship in the Hellenic Navy of Greece, the only commissioned vessel of its kind in any of the world's navies. You may also visit the Averof , another famous WWI battleship.

Every year, the Greek Navy organises a few voyages in which anyone can participate at a very small price (5 Euros). So, if you want to have the experience of rowing in a replica of this legendary ship, just contact us!

2 . Athens Flying Week (5-6 September, 2026)

An airplane lover? The Athens Flying Week , that takes place annually, is the biggest air show in the Balkans and was recently awarded by the European Airshow Council. Located in Tanagra, an hour's drive from Athens (there are buses to take you there) it has, among others, a specially designed raised grandstand that provides spotters with the ideal angle for unique shots of the aircrafts and spectators a higher vantage point of view of the show. New and old fighter planes participate and acrobatic teams give great shows. Tickets start from only 5 Euros!

3. Rally Acropolis (25-28 June, 2026)

The "Rally of Gods" as nick-named in Greece, is considered an extremely difficult rally due to the terrain and weather conditions. There have been enormous "fights" in the 70 years of this rally, the most famous being the "battle of giants", in 1982, between the legendary Audi Quatro and Lancia Delta where the winner was, for the first time a woman (Michelle Muton with Audi). If you are a motor sports fan, it would be a great experience to combine with your visit in Greece.

4. Run the Authentic Marathon! (8-9 November, 2026)

This is a rare experience as this is not a usual Marathon but the authentic one . You run on the same road that the ancient Athenian runner (likely Phidippides) followed to announce the victory of the Atheninans in the Marathon battle, and died from exhaustion! After all, it's not easy to partcipate in a battle and run afterwards with a 10 kilos shield for 42 kilometers! (Don't worry, you are not obliged to do the same). There are also smaller distances (5 and 10 kilometers) if you wish. Just keep in mind that if you want to participate, you must register by June, latest.

5. Exit War Zone

If you, somehow, want to experience war but don't want to become a mercenary, the next best solution is in Athens! The Exit War installations will give you a thrill as it is not virtual, but war scenarios with real actors. So take your team there and do your best! It's not easy to win.

6. Lockhill Escape Rooms

If you enjoy Escape Rooms, one of the most awarded globally is in Athens! The Lockhill Escape Rooms offers some spooky rooms that will give you chills even in the hot Athenian summer. 7. Limba Rage Room

Are you angry? Really angry? This is the place to be! The Limba room is a place where you can break anything you want (however you will have to pay for it, there's no such thing as a free lunch). A funny break from everyday routine, without the danger of getting arrested!

8. Visiting the Greek Military Airplanes Museum

Not far from Athens is the Hellenic Air Force Museum that hosts many military (mostly fighter) airplanes that were used in the course of time. If you are a plane lover you can visit, on weekends only (however, groups can visit any day, with prior communication). Check their website for more details.

9. Swim in the thermal lake of Vouliagmeni

Included in the "Natura 2000 Network" this place is considered of "outstanding natural beauty" by the Greek Ministry of Tourism. This small thermal lake, in Vouliagmeni area, in the Athenian riviera, offers its mineral waters (22-24 C) to all those looking for a soothing swim with one of the most fascinating views in Athens! There are many myths that surround it but it is true that it has 14 underwater tunnels and one reaches 800 metres in length, the longest in the world! There's a restaurant/cafe and, although prices are above average, consider making yourself a gift.

10. Avyssinias Square: A collector's paradise

Coins, stamps, typewriting machines, old books, vinyl records etc. If you are a collector, this is an interesting place the biggest collection of antique stores. The stores are also antiques as the state forbids any changes in them, so time stands still in this place! As it is just next to the Monastiraki Flea Market, it's easy to find it and get lost into the vintage items or rare collections! Good luck with your search of treasures but if you don't find any, you can still go to the historical Cafe Avvysinia or the cosy bars like Voila Athenes and Loukoumi vintage bar.

11. Night open-air theater (mix of various ancient tragedies and comedies)

A small group of actors perform a mix of mythological stories as well tragedies and comedies of ancient Greece (in English). It takes place in an open-air place with a nice view to Acropolis.

12. The Dragon houses (along with Marathon)

No, the dragons don't live there any more but if you want to see their houses it's a half day excursion! Starting from Athens, you visit Marathon battlefield, the Tomp and the lake, then take the ferry across to Evia island (40 minutes) and drive up to these strange ancients structures known as the "Houses of the Dragons" near Styra . These buildings are ancient and still a mystery to archeologists. The bigger and most impressive ones are on top of mountain Ochi, but it takes a 2,5-3 hours hiking (difficult terrain) but you see the three houses that are within easy reach. 13. The Paiania cave (Koutouki)

Among the many caves of Attica (Athens Metropolitan region), this one is the most beautiful. Only a 40-60 minutes drive from city center, depending on traffic, you can find yourselves in the world of the underground! Always a nice experience for kids and adults alike, make sure to wear proper shoes and keep in mind that temperature inside is always 17 Celsius (63 Fahrenheit), so don't go with just...your swimming suit! Tickets are cheap and nice memories are guaranteed!

14. The Davelis cave (watch out! paranormal phenomena reported)

Supposed to be the hideout of a thief, nick-named Davelis, from whom it was named, this cave isn't anything fancy, but the various rumors that exist have given this place fame as a center of paranormal phenomena, there are lots of urban myths about it. In the ancient times it was a sanctuary of ancient Greek god Pan and there were quarries of marble (used for the building of Acropolis), while later a Byzantine church was built in the entrance. In any case, if you encounter any mysterious situations in there, please do let us know! Good luck!

15. The Parnitha Sanatorium (for ghostbusters only!)

This place is considered haunted for many decades. Near the Parnitha casino (you may take the lift to go), it started as a sanatorium, then became a hotel until it closed its gates in 1985. Ever since, it has been completely abandoned however it became the epicenter of ghost hunters. There are numberless stories about it, all creepy. Anyways, do not go there at night, as drug users can be inside it! Next to it, you will also find the Park of the Souls, an open area, where there are many carved wooden logs in the shape of human beings, a tribute to all those who died in this sanatorium.

16. Lavreotiki UNESCO Global Geopark

Not far from Athens, is the place where Athenians mined silver, lead and other materials for thousands of years. The area has been included in the UNESCO geoparks, for its history and huge diversity. The mining district is unique in its mineralogical features. Currently, out of the global known mineral species, nearly 12% are present in Lavreotiki UNESCO Global Geopark , making it a natural mineralogical museum.

They are many (17) for one day so we split them it in 2 days (2 routes) . If you have only one day in Athens , choose the Day 1 route (which is on foot only) that covers Acropolis and most of the important ancient sites.

For the Day 2 route , you can use either a combination of Metro and foot, or one of the three tourist buses or a car (see useful links at the end of this post). Read on!

Day 1 route (on foot)

1. Acropolis Hill

The absolute must see landmark for anyone visiting Athens! The ticket includes everything on top of the Acropolis hill, namely:

Tip 1 : Purchase your tickets online, especially in the summer period! Selection of specific time zone visit in the Acropolis is compulsory . Visitors can enter the Acropolis strictly at the time zone they select when they issue their ticket, and should be at the site 30 minutes before the zone they have chosen.

Tip 2 : Visit Acropolis either early in the morning or late in the afternoon, it is less crowded. Last entrance at 19:00, in peak summer period, and 16:30 in winter period. Backpacks or large bags have to be left at the check-in before entering the Acropolis.

Tip 3 : Before you visit Acropolis you can download the Cosmote Chronos free app that gives you a great virtual presentation of the Parthenon as it was (along with an A.I. personal assistant, in 5G only, to reply to your questions)! Download here the: Android or iOS

2. Acropolis Museum

J ust opposite to the Acropolis Hill, the Acropolis Museum is an archaeological museum focused on the findings of the archaeological site of the Acropolis of Athens. The museum was built to house every artifact found on the rock and on the surrounding slopes, from the Greek Bronze Age to Roman and Byzantine Greece. Accessible for disabled persons.

3. The Western Hills (Muses or Philopappou - Pnyx - Nymphs Hills)

Some of the best things in life are free. So is the area of the Western Hills that comprises of the hills of the Muses (Philopappou), of Pnyx and of the Nymphs. Pnyx Hill is the most important one , since it is the place where Athenians held their upmost civil right: voting!

Most of the buildings there have been destroyed long ago but the one thing that survives may send shivers down your spine: The Orator's bema (Speaker's stand) where the most prominent Athenian politicians, including Themistocles, Pericles and many others, spoke to the Assembly trying to convince them to support their proposals! So just stand before the bema and think what you would suggest to the Athenians, if you had the chance!

4. Kerameikos

It is really worth to see this landmark, the cemetery of ancient Athens, since pre-historic times till 5th century A.D. that hosts also a small but interesting museum. Many of the most famous Athenians are buried here. This is also the place where Pericles pronounced his most famous speech, the Epitaph, a milestone in Greek history.

5. Ancient Agora

The Agora (Marketplace) was the heart of ancient Athens! All Athenians spent considerable time on daily basis, in order to buy things for the household, do business, talk about politics, meet their friends to arrange their next "Symposion" etc. It was full of state buildings, along with altars, temples and shrines, fountains, the Odeon, the Library, the ‘Bema’ (speakers platform) and others. It was there where Socrates, Plato and most of the great Athenians walked discussing philoosophical and other issues and it is also the place where Socrates died. It also hosts a museum (included in ticket).

Tip 1: Do not ommit to visit the very interesting museum in the Attalos Stoa (the long building on the left of the entrance).

Tip 2: Despite Google Maps and other guides show the "Prison of Socrates" to be in Philoppapou Hill, this is a mistake! Socrates died in the prison, the relics of which are at the southwest end of the Agora!

6. Monastiraki - Flea Market

Next to the Agora, Monastiraki is one of the oldest and livilest neighborhoods of Athens. Strolling in the Flea Market is a short journey in the 19th century, while Psirri area was the center of numerous small craft shops that turned out to bars, coffee shops and restaurants.

7. Hadrian's Library

Hadrian, the Roman Emperor, loved the city of Athens and created many buildings, among them the Library that was named after him, on 132 A.D. and the dimensions were 122 x 82 meters. Several important schools of learning and philosophy also occupied the building. It was destroyed during the Herulian invasion of 267 A.D.

8. Roman Agora

Constructed in 11 B.C. with the donations of Julius Caesar and Augustus, was dedicated by the People (Demos) of Athens to their patroness, Athena Archegetis. The most interesting building in there is the "Tower of the Winds", built by astronomer Andronikos Kyrrhestes. It's an octagonal building with carvings of the 8 winds that was used for weather and astronomy observations. It had a solar clock and (for cloudy days) an auxiliary hydralic mechanism that produced a sound every hour, just a small example of their technological progress.

9. Plaka

Plaka is the oldest and most picteresque neibourhood of Athens. In many streets cars are prohibited, giving you the opportunity to stroll around peacefully (or almost, since locals move all around with small motorcycles). The Anafiotika is likely the most remarkable section of Plaka with small houses and very narrow streets, exactly the kind of labyrinth you want to lose yourself in!

10. Hadrian's Arch

Built by Hadrian the Arch that bears his name is a remarkable 18-meter marble arch that once separated the old city (city of Theseus) and the new city (city of Hadrian).

11. Temple of Olympian Zeus (Olympieion)

Right next to Hadrian's Arch, the temple of Zeus was a magnificent temple, the biggest in Athens, took a few...centuries to be built, since works were abandoned many times, but in the end it was the biggest temple in Athens, with 96 x 40 meters dimensions. Only a few columns remain, however the aura of the location is fascinating.

12. Panathenaic Stadium (Kallimarmaro)

The only stadium made of marble in the world was made around 330 B.C. and was used as race track during the Panathinea (religious festival of ancient Athens, while during the Roman era it was used as an arena (the passage that gladiators used is now the entrance to the museum). It was re-built in 1895, with a capacity of 80.000, to host the first modern Olympics (1896) and it's used as the finish of the Authentic Marathon race (November), as the start of the Olympic Torch journey and multiple purposes today. Inside there's a museum that exhibits all Olympic torches and moments from its glorious past!

13. National Garden and Zappeion Hall

The National Garden is an oasis in the most central place of Athens, right next to Syntagma Square. Completed in 1840 by order of the first king of modern Greece, it is accessible from seven entrances it's home to 7.000 trees, 40.000 bushes and 6 small lakes. Next to it is the Zappeion Megaron (Hall) this most beautiful neo-classical building of 1888 it is connected with some great historical events of Greece, as it was used for the first modern Olympics, as hospital in wartime and the signings of many international treaties.

14. Syntagma Square (Constitution Square)

The main square of Athens, where you can see the change of the guards. Every hour men of the Presidential Guard, wearing traditional clothes of the Indepedence war, replace the previous in a silent ceremony, in front of the Unknowh Soldier tomb. It's one of the most photographed occasions in Athens. There is also the Parliament in the building that was the seat of Greece's kings and therefore it is the most popular place for demonstrations!

15. The Athenian Trilogy (National Library - Academia - Athens University)

Three magnificent buildings consist the so-called Athenian Trilogy. To put it simply, it's the number 1 Museum of Greece and one of the most imprortant in the world (even though it is not that famous)! 17. Aristotle's Lyceum

If you have time, you may visit the school of Aristotle (Lyceum), before you head for the last landmark (Lycabettus Hill). Founded in 335 BC it is also called Peripateting (Walking) School, since he liked to teach while walking.

18. Lycabettus Hill

Last but not least, this hill is the perfect Instagram spot for a good reason! At the end of the tiresome Day 2 route, head to the Hill that provides the best 360 degrees view of Athens. If tired, skip the steps and take the funicular (cable car that is INSIDE the hill) and take the best photos of Athens at night!

6. Byzantine and Crhistian Museum

One of the largest museums of its kind in Europe, it has two permanent collections, one for the Byzantine era (4th century - 15th century AD) and the post-Byzantine era (15th century - 20th century AD). For many people, Byzantium is rather unknown, but it was the longest empire ever and its civilisation was ahead of its time, untill its fall, in 1453. 8. Numismatic Museum

This is an interesting museum, not just of its subject (money from antiquity till today) but also because it is hosted in the house of Heinrich Schliemann, an amateur archeologist who discovered Troy and Mycenes (not bad for an amateur, right?). 9. Benaki Museum of Greek Culture

Actually a collection of museums, the main building is located in Kolonaki, near Syntagma Square, and houses large collection of artifacts from many periods of Greece. Other buildings house Islamic art, Chinese art etc. This group of collections includes many distinct categories totaling more than 33,000 items, illustrating the character of the Greek world from antiquity to the formation of the modern state of Greece. 10. Greek Maritime Museum

Sea defined Greece, since the ancient times. For example if the Athenians had not beaten the Persian fleet in the battle of Salamis (biggest naval battle of antiquity) then Democracy and their Classical Golden Age would never exist! 3. Eugenideion Planetarium

A magnificent experience for everyone but especially kids! The Eugenides Foundation’s building complex on Syngrou Avenue hosts, among others, a planetarium. The dome's total surface area is 900 square meters, which makes it one of the largest (and best) digital planetariums in the world. A hidden gem. Included in the "Natura 2000 Network" this place is considered of "outstanding natural beauty" by the Greek Ministry of Tourism. This small thermal lake, in Vouliagmeni area, in the Athenian riviera, offers its mineral waters (22-24 C) to all those looking for a soothing swim with one of the most fascinating views in Athens! There are many myths that surround it but it is true that it has 14 underwater tunnels and one reaches 800 metres in length, the longest in the world! Athens has a long coastline with many beaches on the east and west. You can reach many of them in the west easily with the tram that goes to the Riviera, bus A2, hop-on hop-off buses and taxi / car. 23. Walking in Athens

You can have a nice stroll in Athens archeological center in the three hills, Philopappos (Hill of the Muses), Pnyx and Hill of the Nymphs . They are never filled with crowds and offer a serene retreat, a walk of peace of mind and relaxation. Also great views to the Acropolis and the city while sunset is the best time to get your best Instagram photos! Start from the monument of Philopappos, on top of the same name hill. Next to it, is the Pnyx Hill, an important archeological site (with free entrance) that was the place where the Athenians had their assembly to vote and the hill of Nymphs where the Observatory is located (see also nr. 7).

24. Mountains hiking and biking

Athens is surrounded by three mountains, Parnitha, Penteli and Hymettus . Each one offers nice hiking and biking trails. Parnitha is the tallest and biggest with lots of wild life (a herd of wolves was spotted there last winter) and 2 refuges (in locations Mpafi and Flampouri). In Parnitha you can also climb, while near there is the Tatoi Palace (ex Royal Palace, till 1974, when monarchy in Greece was abolished). You can find such activities in TripAdvisor, Viator etc.

Penteli mountain has a lot of quaries of marble (the Acropolis was built with this marble) and the mysterious Davelis Cave , while in Hymettus , the smallest one, famous for its herbal plants, you can hike in the Kaisariani park (there's also a dragon house near there).

25. Orthodox Easter (April 12, 2026)

Easter celebration in Greece is a nice experience for everyone, especially if you like...fireworks!

Greeks are noisy people and so are their events. So, at midnight of Saturday (April 19, 2025) in most churches of Athens you will hear the tolling of the bells along with the explosions of the fireworks. Even anarchists participate in the event (in one particular church in Agios Kosmos area, so we suggest that you avoid it because they don't use firecrackers but...molotov bombs!). However, the biggest event happens on the island of Chios (the "War of two villages") where two villages send around 100.000 firecrackers against each other!

2. Marathon and Marathon lake

Also a great half day trip! You may visit the Marathon , the place of one of the most important battles of the ancient world, where the Athenians defeated the Persians thus saving their newly born democracy. You can visit the Tomb (tumulus) where Athenians buried their dead after the battle, the Marathon Archeological Museum , the nearby beach and the Marathon Run Museum , near the start of the Authentic Marathon Race (held annually on November). Last but not least, you may visit the Dam for a coffee with a beautiful view!

3. Marathon, Marathon lake and Dragon houses

This is the above trip plus the Dragon houses of Styra, in Evia island. After Marathon , we take the ferry across (40 minutes) and we drive up to these strange ancients structures known as the "Houses of the Dragons" . These buildings are ancient and are still a mystery to archeologists. The bigger and most impressive ones are on top of mountain Ochi, but it takes a 2,5-3 hours hiking (difficult terrain) so we will see the three houses that are within easy reach near Styra. 4. Loutraki, Heraion, Vouliagmeni and Ancient Corinth

How about visiting a seaside town with famous thermal spa, an ancient temple, the "rectangular lake" and an ancient city, in half a day?

Loutraki , to start with, is a seaside town, famous since antiquity for its thermal waters that Spartans, often visited, after their battles. Sylla, the Roman Emperor, was also a frequent visitor. Not far, from there (10 min. drive) is the Heraion Temple , a well preserved archeological site, dedicated to Godess Hera, next to the sea. Another 10 min. drive will take you to the weird shaped (rectangular) Vouliagmeni lake , which is not a lake as it is connected to the sea through a narrow passage, and offers an amazing view. 5. Mycenes, Nafplion and Epidavros

"Agamemnon's face!", shouted Heinrich Schliemann, an amateur archeologist, who discovered Troy and Mycenes (not bad for an amateur!), when he found the famous golden mask, exhibited now in the National Archeological Museum in Athens. In case you were absent from history class that day, Agamemnon was the leader of the Greek army that destroyed Troy (along with the notorious gang of Achilles, Ulysses, Ajax and the other vigilante!).

You may feel his excitement when you face the "Gate of Lions" at the ancient city entrance as the place gives chills to anyone and perhaps even more , when you visit the tomb (Treasure of Atreas)! Afterwards, you can head to Nafplion , a charming city by the sea that was the capital of Greece, for a short while, stroll in its streets, marvel the view from the castle and walk down the 990 (or so, i lost counting) steps (better not do it vice-versa!).

Last is the Epidavros ancient healing complex of Asclepios, the best and more luxurious "hospital" of that era! There is also the Epidavros Theater still in excellent shape and famous for its acoustics. The wonder of nature, the marvel of men! This is truly a once in a lifetime sight! These monoliths that seem to have fallen from heaven would be spectacular on their own, however human spirit has created yet another miracle. 9. The big battles of ancient Greece

This is a thematic day tour dedicated in two of the most important battles against the Persians, the first in Marathon being a great victory and the second in Thermopylae (300 Spartans) being one of the most famous defeats in military history! Marathon created a legend for the Athenians who won a greatly superior army but this was only the beggining of the Persian wars, the next act, in Thermopylae, was a lot more dramatic.

The Hollywood film (300) was a lousy distortion of the truth (there were around 5.000 Greeks, who fought untill they were about to be encircled. Leonidas asked the other Greeks to leave the battle field, to fight again another day. He and his 300 would stay to cover their retreat and die gloriously. The example of their noble sacrifice hardened the will of all Greeks who won the following battles and saved Greece and newborn democracy. 10. Nearby islands in a day cruise

First things first, make sure to have sunscreen with you! There are some lovely islands near Athens (named Saronic islands ) and you can visit some of them with a day cruise. Alternatively you may go to one island only so that you have more time to spend in the destination of your choice. Aegina, Hydra, Poros and Spetses are the most popular, with different reasons for each one. We would not suggest Myconos because it's far and (especially in summertime) it is overpriced.

Aegina is an island that provides the best pistachios! Souvlatzidiko (the main Greek street food)

Souvlaki is the most popular street food in Greece. The traditional version is a wrapped pie with just 3 ingredients, meat in cubes (or slices called gyros or minced meat called kebap), tomato and onions. Despite the simplicity it's one of the most delicious street food recipes you can taste anywhere and is not junk food! It is also the cheapest food you can have in Greece, that's why they are thousands of them in Athens (many of them, only take away or delivery)!

Nowdays, there are many "variations" of souvlaki, with any kind of meat, vegeterian and even vegan and every souvlatzidiko has its own. The ones we suggest are famous either for preserving the traditional versions in excellent quality or innovating in interesting ways. DO NOT expect a fancy environment, we go there for the taste! The following suggestions are all in the city center.

1. Kostas

Since 1950, it serves the traditional souvlaki with some little variations. One of the most popular souvlatzidiko, the store is run by the third generation of owners and you will locate it from the long queues outside! Located in Pentelis 5 street , very near to Syntagma square .

2. Lefteris o Politis

Another legendary store, it specialises in kebap souvlaki, since the 50's and recently opened a second store to all Athenian's delight!

One store is in Satovriandou 20 street in Omonia square while the other is in Romvis 18 street, in Syntagma Square . Choose any of the two.

3. Volvi

One of the traditional souvlaki champions, in Evripidou 24-26 street , it has a great reputation for good reasons! It is very near the Varvakeios market and you can also have a quick visit there to see an old market with the usual Greek chaotic (and lovely) environment!

4. Hoocut

Some young chefs decided to make souvlaki something more than the usual. And they succeded as their innovative approach has many fans. Located in Agias Eirinis 4 Square, near Monastiraki.

Mezedopoleio (drinking and eating lots of dishes)

Mezedopoleio is a kind of Greek tavernas, where you go to drink alcohol and eat a little bit of many (usually small) dishes. This is great for travelers since they can taste lots of various dishes instead of the usual a la carte where you get just one plate for each person. They are usually open all day, while some also offer live music (especially in weekends).

They usually have large choice of drinks. You should be careful with ouzo, a sweet Greek drink, which you should always mix with (cold) water, otherwise you may get dizzy in no time! In any case do NOT drink and drive!

5. To Kousoulo (Thission area)

This is an excellent choice, a traditional Greek mezedopoleio, in the very touristy Thission area (Amfiktionos 27 street) , but prices are reasonable and tastes vary from good to excellent! It offers a wide selection of classic greek dishes and more. Try the porcini mushrooms with cheese, the chicken tigania (don't ask what it is, just try it!), pumpkin balls, kotsi (pork) and marinated anchovies.

6. Opos palia (Acropolis area)

Despite the fact that it's close to Acropolis (Veikou 2 street) , it's not the usual tourist eatery, it has its own character (like an old greek cafe of the 60's) and prices are reasonable. The portions are generous and has a rather extensive catalogue. Good collection of beers, tsipouro (raki) and ouzo but small in wines. Try...hmmm, what should we suggest? Well, see for yourselves and choose but do not ommit the keftedakia (fried meatballs) its fried potatoes and the grilled haloumi cheese!

7. Sfika (Koukaki area)

Do not expect anything luxurious or an extensive catalogue, however this small place is a good value for money eatery, in the touristy area of Koukaki (Stratigou Kontouli 15 street) with the habit of giving strange names to its dishes (such as "Demonised Wasp" or "Strange Bird"..!). In any case, they will explain what exactly they offer and you will not get...lost in the translation! Try the marinated chicken, the cretan apaki, feta cheese with honey, their (spicy) sausage and meat platter.

8. To Triantafyllo tis Nostimias (Syntagma area)

This one, very near to Syntagma Square (Lekka 22 street) specialises in sea food. Greek sea food is widely considered very tasty and you can verify it in this simple yet decent mezedopoleio at reasonable prices. Try the top sellers like octopus, thrapsalo (squid), saganaki shrimps (no, it's not japanese) and fried cod with garlic sause.

Psitopoleio (Meat Taverna)

The meat tavernas of Greece are for carnivores only! They always have a selection of salads and appetizers (and sometimes a more diverse variety of dishes) but the main offer is not for vegetarians. They offer many kinds of meat, with lamb and pork being the most popular choices, usually charcoal grilled. That gives them a distinct taste (somewhat bitter, but that can be compensated with lemon). Try the lamb ribs, kontosouvli (spit roasted BBQ pork), the "forbidden" kokoretsi (lamb or goat intestines) biftekia (oversized flattened meatballs) and the "usual suspects" gyros, souvlaki and kebab. So where do we get a get a good portion of cholesterol? See below!

9. Kalyvas (Koukaki area)

A great choice for meat lovers who want great value for money. Almost everything here is tasty and very reasonably priced (that's why it's not easy to find a table). It's located in Koukaki (Dimitrakopoulou 91-93 street) . Try the Kebab Roll, Fried Potatoes, Spicy Grilled Cheese, Pork Skewers, Chicken Skewer AND above all the Grilled Vegetables.

10. Meat the Greek (Monastiraki)

This is a small but cosy place, near Monastiraki (Fokionos 2-4 street) with great value for money. They don't have a great selection but whatever they offer is tasty and cheap, whithout compromising quality! Try the Cretan dakos salad, the Mastelo cheese with jam and their meat platter!

11. Meat n' Roses (Syntagma area)

This is also a small gem, very near to Syntagma Square (Amerikis 7 street) . Also a small place with great value for money choice in Athens that offers more than the traditional greek meat tastes, including burgers and sandwiches. However, we would advise you to stick to the local dishes, like souvlaki and their meat suggestions and also their potatoes!

12. Atlantikos (Psyrri area)

Located in an area that is reborn in Psyrri (Avliton 7 street) , very close to Monastiraki, you will taste some great seafood in reasonable prices.The place is small and may have to wait in the queue, but certainly worth it. Prices are very reasonable. You can try the classic delicacies of locals, such as octopus, calamari, squids and/or small fish like anchovies or sardines as well as seabass or mpakaliaro (cod) with garlic sauce.

13. Symposio Resto Bar (Syntagma area)

When Plato wrote his famous book "Symposio" this eatery did not exist. If it did, we are sure, Plato would be a frequent visitor! This beautiful and cozy place, in Apollonos 22 street, near Syntagma square , provides a high culinary experience at reasonable prices. The place offers more than sea food but you should try beetroot salad with shrimps, seafood linguine and sea bass carpacio. Good wine selection, while prices are average.

14. Pezoulas (Kallithea area)

If you are in the area, don't miss this little and cozy place, there are treasures in there! It is an historical fish tavern as many artists were frequent visitors, since 1951! Prising is reasonable. Try the exquisite smoked eel with fava (eels were considered the best delicacy by ancient Athenians), mussels with vegetables, octopus, crayfish and fresh fish.

Modern Greek cuisine

The new generations of Greek chefs have started over the last 30 years to experiment with the traditional dishes. The results in general are good and many old recipes find a new fresh and interesting interpretation, providing new culinary experiences! Also, these restaurants are a paradise for wine lovers, since they usually provide an extensive list of Greek wines ( Cicero had said: It was worth to conquer Greece, even just for the wine!). Greek wine varieties are hard to find outside the country, due to limited production, so try them. You will not be dissapointed.

15. Caravin (Thission area)

This is actually a wine bar with a very interesting selection of traditional dishes given with a fresh perspective. It is in Thission area ( Akamantos 11 street ) with an extensive list of good Greek wines. Prices are a bit more than average but absoloutely worth it! Try the fava with octopus, dolmades, meatballs, or their platters. Ask their help for the wine, they know!

16. Kiouzin (Kolonaki area)

Another interesting example of modern local cuisine, this pretty restaurant is located in Likavitou 16 street, in Kolonaki (near Syntagma). Iinnovative as it embeds many non-Greek elements to traditional Greek recipies with good to great results and reasonable prices. Try the Kataifi cheese balls, the zuchinni balls, the tuna with ouzo, and stuffed mushrooms. Decent wine list.

17. Mani Mani (Acropolis area)

Mani Mani is not the ABBA song, it's a Greek expression that means quickly. Mani region is also the homeland of the two chefs, who were inspired by the cooking of their grandmothers but "modified" it. It was worth it. Considered and awarded as a pioneer restaurant, it is in Falirou 10 street, near Acropolis. We could suggest among others the playful green salad, kagianas (omellete), veal liver and tsouchtes (traditional pasta with smoked pork). Prices are reasonable.

18. Varoulko Seaside Restaurant (Piraeus area)

The owner, chef Lefteris Lazarou is a pioneer of modern Greek cuisine in sea food. His innovations inspired the next generations of young chefs and created a new wave of sea food restaurants with many interesting suggestions. This (Michelin awarded) restaurant is in Koumoundourou coast 54-56, in Piraeus, the port of Athens. We will not give you any suggestions, everything there is simply top class (so are prices, but this is inevitably the cost of excellence)!

19. Sense Rooftop Restaurant (Acropolis area)

On the rooftop of "Athens Was" 5 star hotel,located in Dionysiou Areopagitou 5 street, in Acropolis area , this premium restaurant offers something more than top garstonomy, a superb view of the Acropolis. Their cuisine is a fusion of international and modern Greek. In short, if you want a stunning view dinner (at premium prices), this is certainly a place to consider!

20. Aleria (Metaxourgeio area)

This multi-awarded restaurant offers fine dining at prices you would not expect from a top class one, eg 6 course menus at 70 to 85 Euros (without wine). In a neglected area that is becoming young people's haven for entertainment, it is in Megalou Alexanadrou 57 street , Metaxourgeio area . In a mansion with patio for the summer you will have a great gastronomical experience that you will recall with nostalgia.

Even though many of the above eateries offer vegetarian and vegan choices, there are increasingly more that are specialised and therefore provide a much wider selection. So here are some of the best in Athens center.

21. Vegan beat Athens (Monastiraki - Syntagma areas)

In the middle of the Monastiraki to Syntagma distance, in Perikleous 56 street , lies one of the best vegan stores! We say this not just from our own experience but also from the thousands of people who applause this (small) establishment! Do not ommit to try their vegan gyros AND the mushrooms!

22. Peas (Koukaki area)

What we love about this little place, is that they offer some spicy vegan tastes that are simply wow! If you don't like the feeling of fire in your mouth, well there are many more options and all are from good to excellent. Located in Falirou 40 street, in Koukaki area.

23. Ta Karamanlidika tou Fani (Varvakeios Market and Monastiraki areas)

How many doors to paradise are there? In Athens, they are at least two, but you have to be determined, otherwise they will not open for you!

To explain, the Karamanlidika is one of the traditional cuisines of the Anatolian (=Asia Minor) Greeks and our beloved one! It has two main elements, explosions of hot lava in your mouth and bursts of cholesterol in your body!!! If you like spicy food these are THE places to go!

They are two, one in Sokratous 1 & Evripidou Street , near the Varvakeios Market and the new one in Ermou 119 street , in Monastiraki area . The atmosphere in both is very unique and prices are reasonable.

24. Oinomageirio Hepiros (inside Varvakeios Market)

This belongs to a very special kind of Greek restaurants, named Patsatzidika, because the main dish is Patsas soup. Let us warn you. You will either love it or hate it! Patsas is a somewhat gelly soup made of beef or pork pieces like feet and belly! It is supposed to have healing effect on stomach problems, this is why Greeks eat it after heavy drinking. Some medical reports (of small scale, though) confirm its soothing results. Prices are good and, even if you don't like the soup, the experience is yet really authentic! In Filopimenos 4 street , inside the Varvakeios market.
